What particularly spurred the visit to Provincetown? I know the company visited in 2019, and I wanted to know what brought the group back for this collaboration and fundraiser.

Eryc Taylor Dance performed a duet at the last-ever Cape Dance Festival in 2019. This year would've marked their 10th anniversary, but they, unfortunately, didn't make it through the pandemic. The Courtyard Fundraiser on June 18, 5-7 PM at The Mary Heaton Vorse House is an informal outdoor sneak peek of excerpts of new dance work ETD premiered in NYC last Fall and opened to rave reviews. We believe in community building and collaboration, so we've invited local professional dancers Evan Montgomery and Brad Landers to learn the choreography at rehearsals this week and perform at the event on Sunday. Gene Tartaglia and Ken Fulk of The Provincetown Arts Society are graciously hosting a Courtyard Fundraiser Event to raise tax-deductible funds on our company's behalf. The goal is to curate and cultivate a new dance festival for Provincetown and the greater Cape community. We will offer dance workshops for all levels & ages and pop-up events culminating in the production of Factory|Refractory, the company's latest immersive dance extravaganza in the Summer of 2024.

What was the inspiration behind the name of the piece?

Factory|Refractory is a tribute to the mid-90s NYC nightlife and a nod to Andy Warhol's Factory parties. Refractory means "resisting control or authority." The mid-1990s in NYC were like Studio 54 on steroids. Club kids, including Amanda LePore, Richie Rich, and others, ruled the nightlife and still work in NYC's entertainment and fashion scene today. It was all about being over the top. The exaggerated artistry and fashion-conscious creatives were most notable for their flamboyant and eccentric costumes. As a cabaret-style, part runway show, Factory|Refractory is a multi-sensory roller coaster dance ride in four parts that addresses addiction, mental health, struggle, recovery, and destiny. These themes and various movement styles were inspiring forces Taylor's choreography and vision. Two original scores by Daniel Tobias and music by Guns and Roses, Grace Jones, and Kevin J. Prodigy, reflect the time and mood of the work. The development of this project is made possible by The New York State Council on the Arts, The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant, and The Marta Heflin Foundation. You can find more information about Factory|Refractory here: Press Media Folder.

I'd like to know what the performance history of the show was and where it has previously premiered.

Factory|Refractory premiered November 20, 2022, at the infamous SLATE, NY, nightclub around the corner from The Limelight in New York City. We received ovations and a sold-out premiere; ETD performed six more encore shows and upcoming performances planned for October 2023. We hope to bring Factory|Refractory to Provincetown in the Summer of 2024.
